Anatoly Smeliansky isaleading Russian theatre writer, scholar, and critic. Hejoined the Moscow Art Theatre (MXAT) in1980asLiterary Director and was appointed Associate Artistic Director in1996. Dean ofthe MXAT School for Academic Studies since 1986, hebecame the head ofthe school in2000. Dr.Smeliansky isalsoEditor-in-Chief ofthe new edition ofthe Complete Works Konstantin Stanislavsky and The Moscow Art Theatre Encyclopedia. Heisthe author ofOur Collocutors: Russian Classics onStage, Bulgakov and the Moscow Art Theatre, IsComrade Bulgakov Dead? (rated among the best theatre publications in1995byAmerican Theatre magazine) and The Russian Theatre after Stalin. Hehas extensive experience lecturing onRussian and Soviet theatre inthe United States (Columbia, Carnegie Mellon University, Georgetown, Harvard, Princeton, Yale), France (the Sorbonne), and England (Cambridge and Oxford). Dr.Smeliansky isatheatre columnist for Moscow News Weekly. AsSecretary ofthe Board ofthe Russian Union ofTheatremakers and founding member ofthe American-Soviet Theatre Initiative, hehas represented Soviet and Russian theatre atvarious international symposia and conferences all over the world. Dr.Smeliansky facilitated and moderated the Slavyansky Bazaar-100Years, aconference inMoscow inJune, 1997commencing the centennial season ofthe MXAT.Heisthe recipient ofseveral national awards for artistic excellence, including Distinguished Artsmaker ofRussia.
In2008was awarded Order ofServices tothe Fatherland ofthe Third Degree.
